Faisal Shahzad single-handedly showed us that Inspector Clouseau is not just a fictional character – he’s now working for us. Mayor Bloomberg put it best when he said, “We got lucky!” The very idea that this terrorist could board a plane after being the subject of an intense manhunt ought to give us great pause!
I completely disagree with those that say our law enforcement did a great job to apprehend this guy so fast; and others that say, ‘hey, the guy would have been arrested in Dubai anyway.’ After all, this freak could have blown up the plane on the tarmac or maybe on takeoff – all he needed was a shoe bomb or other dasdardly WOMD, even used a consealed biological weapon. Had something like that happened, the Taliban could still have celebrated a ‘booming’ success! This would have of course meant killing other Muslims; but, I’m not at all sure that would have mattered to this nut-case. We should count our lucky stars that Shahzad is as big a blungler as Clouseau, but, at the same time put on a full-court-press to plug the many holes in our internal security systems, especially on international flights.
